The mask that I have created is based upon the social impact society has put on me and how it has changed my identity in ways that are affecting the way that I act around different people. This mask was made to represent how society has changed me.
There are many factors in socialization and they have played a very big part in my life.
The way that these factors are put on me is how I was taught to act in society, be that good or bad. These could include examples of Gender of a person, Social Class, Ability/Disability, Race, Age, or sometimes even the way people look. Something I learned a great deal about in my Humanities Class was the Agents of Socialization, which are the things that impact the way that people act or the way that they might dress, talk, or socialize.
One other thing that I learned about in the same class is about Norms that I have been taught follow in Society, this includes what people think is the right way to act around other people or how if you don't follow the Norms then it will result in punishment such as teasing or being shunned, the Norms that are in society are very important to some people and are somewhat heavily enforced. These Norms can be ever changing and are always present in society.
All of these concepts play very large roles in Sociology to the point where it can influence people to completely change themselves to fit in with the rest of society, either by changing what they wear or to the point to where they will get surgery to change their identity completely. In class we had watched a documentary on how African American girls were trying to straighten their hair and in some cases, bleach their own skin, just to be able to fit in with the rest of society. To me this was shocking because in the video they didn't seem to like the way that they looked so they would change themselves. I think that it is really stupid that people will judge other people for the the way that they might look or act.
My mask symbolizes how I have two different personalities that vary depending on who I am around, it also features cracks in the left side of my mask to show how the more subtle part of my identity is being pulled apart by the more serious side of my identity. On the right side of the mask there are more organized symbols and textures where as on the left side there are more smoothed out designs and textures like swirls and vines, the reason I have chosen to put these different things on my mask is because it represents two different parts of my identity or who I am.
These masks that we have made are to represent the affects that socialization has had on us and how it may have changed our identities. All of the masks are personalized by each individual to represent how each of us are affected and we show this through the many different things that we add to our masks to show that no one is alike and that everyone is affected in a different way.
An example of this is how each person has their own symbols and designs that they add to their masks like cracks, splatters or dents/holes.
These different things on the masks all have stories behind them and are there to show that. Some other things that are put on the masks represent how some people/me go against the norms of society and how it doesn't matter if they get negative sanctions from people.
On my own mask the many symbols represent different things, for example the Swirls on the left side represent how I am usually calm, the Checkered area on the right side of my mask is to show Organization and how assembled I am, One other thing is the Yin Yang that I have chose to put on my mask and how that shows that the two sides of my identity are equal except I have put cracks coming from the right side over to the left side to show how my more organized side is breaking into a larger piece of my identity.
My mask represents a part of me and it shows how the affects of socialization have changed me as a person and the many different ways that I act. It shows how I have tried to be different from everyone else and how sociality stops me from doing just that.
