Globalized Markets Would Crumble without the Internet
It has been said that the Internet has brought about change at an alarming rate. That it has globalized the modern world and changed the way that most things work nowadays. Now, without the use of the internet, world-wide markets and trade systems would crumble.
Ever since the Internet had come into existence the way the world communicates, does business and shares information has been changing at a rapid rate. In nearly every corner of the world, from Mumbai to Madrid, one cannot enter a cafe or walk down the street without seeing someone talking, texting, or surfing the Internet on their cell phones, laptops or tablet PCs. At the click of a button one could search for something unknown or buy something from across the world.
This is a very important matter because we are being rapidly globalized by the Internet. Personally, I think this is a good thing and a bad thing, it is good because people have access to worlds of information at the click of a button, but it is also a bad thing because people are becoming more reliant on it.
I know from firsthand experience how commonly people will use the internet, it is a great thing to have and can offer so many opportunities, but I also know that having constant access to it is not always a good thing. It seems like in some cases it is misused or overused and from that people are becoming more and more dependent on it.
It has been said that “the internet is the backbone of the global economy” ("Technology and Globalization | Globalization101." Globalization101. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2014. ), basically meaning that without the use of the internet, the economy would eventually collapse due to the fact that almost everything is done through the internet these days. There are business transactions, banking, sales and several other things that are done with the use of the internet. Almost every business has some sort of online presence, a good example of this is Amazon and how it basically only exists as an online store, yet it is still used world-wide.
I know what it is like to have internet constantly available, and I think that it is a great thing. Even now people are becoming more and more connected to each other through smart phones, tablets and PC's. With these devices the world is becoming more advanced and they are used for so many things. An example I can come up with is how the Military has started using tablets for information, or how one could buy a product on the go.
Like I said earlier, if the Internet were to just suddenly disappear, global markets would collapse. As said by Charles W. L. Hill, web transactions have gone from “virtually nothing in 1994 to nearly $657 billion in 2000” ("Globalization and the Internet."SoftLayer Blog. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Feb. 2014 ). In only six years the Internet had become one of the largest forms of marketing. From that we can deduce that people spend a LOT of time on the internet, both just browsing and buying products that companies sell online.
Internet marketing has become a lot more common than it was back when the internet was first starting up. Nowadays there is almost no website that does not contain product adds of some sort. That is due to the spread of internet globalization and marketing. Companies want to get their products out there to everyone they can, so they have started marketing online and running adds through popular websites to get their products out there.
With so much marketing going on through the use of the Internet, something is bound to go wrong without the use of it. Lots of companies rely on the Internet to sell their products, and without it they would most likely face several losses. The Internet is used by so many people in this time, so companies try to get more customers via the internet. There are over 1 billion users on Facebook alone, over 6 billion hours of videos are watched each month on YouTube, so if companies paid to run adds on websites like that, then they are bound to get more business.
With people spending roughly 32 hours a week online, it would be crazy for companies to not advertise online. That just shows that the internet is a very important marketing factor. Some might think that the internet is a bad thing but it really isn't. This is just my opinion, and I'm sure a countless number of people share the same opinion, but I think that the internet is a great thing and with it around things are a lot easier for people.

For this project we were to write an Op-Ed on a certain topic about Globalization and how that has affected the world. We had started the project by picking a topic to write about e.g. the Internet, Gay Rights, etc. After we had chosen our topics we were to go out and find sources that we thought suitable for researching the chosen topic. After finding at least 4 sources we were to start writing our Op-Ed first drafts so that they could be critiqued and improved upon. Once we had refined our Op-Ed's to some extent, we could begin working on our political cartoon which was supposed to help deliver the message our paper was trying to get across. Once both pieces were done we were to tape them up onto a black piece of cardboard paper after which they were hung around the class or hung out in the hallway for people to see.
After this project I think that the biggest takeaway for me is that I now have a much clearer understanding of what globalization is and how it has changed the world for good and bad. I now realize how fast globalization can spread throughout the world and also how it can sometimes change people. Also how it helps bring jobs to impoverished countries and can help get money flowing through poor communities. I now also have a better understanding of how businesses work in other countries and how bad it can be for the workers in their working environments.
I do not think that I have grown that much as a cartoonist, although I do think that I now have a better understanding of how to draw political cartoons and what kind of work goes into them. I have always been interested in drawing and art and it has been something that I really enjoy doing, so this part of the project was really fun for me and I think that there was something to take away from it. I think that it is a valuable skill to be able to create cartoons that address political problems, because not only is it getting the information out there, it is doing it in a fun and entertaining way. I think that this project has helped me grow greatly as an artist and has given me a better understanding of how political cartoons are done.
While writing the Op-Ed piece I noticed that it was rather different from how I am used to writing. The paragraphs were a lot shorter than I am used to writing and there were a lot of them, also we used a different style of writing to get our message across to the readers. This was a very confusing project for me at first, but after a while I finally got it down that the writing that we were doing was much different than what I am used to. I think that through doing this type of writing, it has allowed me to expand upon my ability as a writer and has helped me become more understanding of different writing styles. I think that the biggest takeaway for me after finishing this project is how to write an op-ed. It can be used as a great way to get information across to people in a simple way.
